Affordable and Sustainable Multi-Material Lightweight Design and Manufacturing - MatDeMa

Project summary

MatDeMa project will develop a one-step automated (robotized) inline manufacturing process for sustainable net shape Thermoplastic-Fibre Metal Laminate composites. The manufacturing process will be designed to achieve a significant reduction of costs and maximizing material utilisation without reducing parts performances offering new perspectives for large-scale production of these composites for new industrial sectors. The system will be supported by virtual design tools that combine material, structure and process requirements. To improve recycling at end-of-life of hybrid composites, a metal/composite debonding-on-demand mechanisms will be developed. The design for sustainability and circularity will be applied and developed from the concept phase up to the demonstration to minimise the environmental impact trough Life Cycle Assessment. The project starts at TRL2, the developed concept will be validated on a laboratory pilot line scale and a representative demonstrator at TRL5.
