Simulation-​aided de­sign of solid lub­ri­cant coa­tings - LUB­RI­COAT

Pro­ject sum­ma­ry

The pro­po­sed pro­ject com­bi­nes ato­mistic si­mu­la­ti­ons with new de­po­si­ti­on tech­no­lo­gies to de­sign a new class of su­per­hard solid lub­ri­cant coa­tings based on mo­lyb­denum di­sul­phi­de com­bi­ned with car­bon. We em­ploy mole­cu­lar dy­na­mics to iden­ti­fy com­po­si­ti­on and struc­tu­re with the op­ti­mum me­cha­ni­cal and tri­bo­lo­gi­cal pro­per­ties and use two novel me­thods to pre­pa­re such coa­tings at an in­dus­tri­al scale. Op­ti­mi­zed coa­tings will be tested both in la­bo­ra­to­ries and in industry-​driven field tests. The main goal is to har­vest fun­da­men­tal re­se­arch to ad­van­ce the coa­ting tech­no­lo­gy from TRL 2 to TRL 6 by de­mons­tra­ting the solid lub­ri­cant coa­ting pro­duc­tion on an in­dus­tri­al scale.
